About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To learn everything I can about wherever I go.

ABOUT ME

I like to say that I am most in my element when I am out of my element. I have a passion for learning that I doubt will ever satisfied and I thrive in new/unfamiliar situations. I have a bucket list that completely misrepresents what I want to do because I want to do nearly anything I haven't tried yet; no iPod has the memory to store a list that long. I love to cook and love to travel. I am a major fan of movies, especially ones that approach a story in an entirely different way. I love reading realistic fiction, and have tried my hand at writing some, but feel that it will take a while for that to develop to where I want it. I come from divorced and remarried parents, who all are very different and have influenced me in different ways. I get the reason from my father, determination from my mother, personal responsibility from my stepmom, and patience from my stepdad. My brother has taught me to seize the moment and my best friend taught me reliability. My deceased aunt taught me to never give up and my other aunt to always give help when you can. I have learned a lot in my 27 years but I know that hails in comparison to what I have left to learn, so I hope that my experience on this website perpetuates that.

PHILOSOPHY

I live to learn and to spread what I have learned. I believe that you can never understand anything without understanding it's counterpart. Everything that I believe I like can only be appreciated when I have experienced the opposite of that. I have lived at home, I want to move around. I used to be picky about food, and now I will eat anything that anybody considers food.

I believe that conversation promotes knowledge, and that patience allows understanding. When speaking with someone, we must remember that what they are saying comes from a lifetime's experiences and their words carry that weight, just as our responses do.

Experiences are also heavily affected by moods. The way we perceive something could be totally different depending on the day that the occurrence takes place and how we are feeling when it does. Don't be afraid to try something twice, because you may not remember how you were feeling the first time, and the second time might have entirely different results.

I also believe that nothing is permanent or exactly the way we think it is. I think everything is constantly changing and evolving, from personal beliefs to nature, laws and societies, even our likes and dislikes. I went into my new job swearing that I could never be a vegetarian and after working with a multitude of them, I find myself considering it more and more.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

As of right now, I am only surfing and hanging out with surfers and hosts. I don't really have room to host anybody but I am very eager to meet people traveling through and show them this new city I have started to love.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have surfed a handful of times and have met lots of people on the website in public forums. It is an amazing idea that I think most people use respectfully. I plan on participating for a long time.

Interests

Cooking - I was raised by two sets of parents who both provided excellent home cooked meals. My mom is a wiz in the kitchen and my dad is a master of the grill. I have taken lessons from both to experiment with odd ingredient combinations and adventurous plates, not all of which come out successfully.Culture - Whenever I go to a new place I immediately want to experience what is considered to be typical to that area and why that makes the place so special.Language - Along with any barrier, I particularly love overcoming those of language. I find it amazing to learn a new languange, notice the similarities between two of them, and eventually find a way to speak the language as comfortably as I do my first one.Movies - I believe a good movie is one that accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish. If the goal is to evoke tears of sympathy, joy, and laughter all in one, and it does that, then it succeeds in being a good movie. If it desires to raise the highest possible body count while maintaining decent dialogue and does so, then it too is a good movie. My one requirement is that acting needs to be solid, unless of course it is intended not to be.Books - I read when I can, which unfortunately isn't enough anymore. I can become enveloped in a book that uses high amounts of sensory details. I was once a fan of dialogue, and now have turned towards description. I like to imagine the scene being created by the author as they intended it to be.Music - I can like almost anything. My favorite tunes, however, are usually indie/post-punk/alternative stuff. I like a lot of rap, hard rock, dance, and classical as well. All Sports - I enjoy competition and physical activity immensely. I played soccer and tennis in high school, soccer being my stronger suit only out of effort, but I love basketball, softball, football, volleyball, raquetball, squash: you name it. I will play anything.Comedy - I love keeping the mood light when I can. Life is serious but the things that happen around it typically are not, so I tend to make a joke of them. This can annoy some people, and when that's the case, I tone it down. But if it's not a horrible situation, expect me to make a crack!Philanthropy - I spent 9 days in Guatemala working with Habitat for Humanity and I think it set me on my life's course. I was more in my element than I have ever been and I plan on continuing that kind of work for as long as I live. I wasn't just helping people, but they were helping me learn more about a culture and myself. Incredible experience!

Tobias Wolff

Junot Diaz

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I climbed the Volcan Pacaya in Guatemala. It was the most thrilling thing I have ever done; looking around and seeing small towns in valleys miles below you. And then you look straight out and see half a dozen more volcanoes. It was breathtaking.

I visited Las Cuevas in Grenada, where people have lived for generations in caves in the hillside. I spoke with a Romanian who decided to quit his job and move there and he shared stories of the lifestyle. It was so fascinating.

I also did La Tomatina. Getting nailed by tomatoes was awesome. Then walking in a massive mob with literally no control kinda sucked, but it was certainly an experience!

Teach, Learn, Share

I have the enthusiastic curiosity of a puppy-dog: I don't know if that is inherent or something that can be learned, but maybe getting to know me can influence the same approach in someone else.I am very interested in communication: how it is is done, why it's different in certain circles, why it's different for specific people. I love talking about this.I also enjoy speaking on spirituality, even though I am atheist. Human's natural tendencies toward believing in a higher power amazes me and that is something I could talk about for hours on end.
