About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To be able to eat from day to day.

ABOUT ME

I'm a British English guy living just up the road from Yokohama on a shoestring. (Very happily). Past my prime a bit, but still with enough gas in the tank to be curious. Struggling to learn Japanese. And I have just moved to a place by a river, surprisingly rural for being in the middle of a megalopolis. Interests and all that malarkey below.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Just started on here... See where it goes... but up for coffee, language exchange to begin with.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I kind of did something similar to this when I visited South Korea a couple of years back, but through the website SharedTalk which is just a straight up language exchange place.

Interests

Japan - that's why I am here.

Computers - that's how I found this site.

Beer - that's why I need to start exercising.

Travel - that's how I ended up in Japan

and of course, interaction, rock and roll, movies and onsen.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music - intense stuff which used to be 1980s US Hardcore / Post-hardcore punk (Big Black); moved on to techno and gabba dance music; then went to alt-country songs about well depression and death (Will Oldham) and many things in between. Currently into the Japanese folk singer Tomokawa Kazuki and AKB 48.Film - Ghostbusters, Bergman and Takashi Miike. oh and Marx Brothers.Books - well problem is I can't really read any of the ones here in Japan, but I used to devour writers such as Dostoyevsky, Henry Miller, Sherwood Anderson, Christopher Isherwood, Patrick Hamilton, and have an interest in scifi and fantasy that dates back to my teenage years.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Hmm, well I am really into music, so I guess one of the most intense experiences I had was when I went to Awa o-dori in Tokushima in Shikoku Japan and wtached the dances there. One group was accompanied by a shamisen player who also sung. Her voice was one of the wildest most intense voices that I have ever heard. Unfortunately, at that time my Japanese reading ability was really bad so I didn't know who she was.

Teach, Learn, Share

Of course I can show you around all the nooks and crannies of Tokyo - particularly "live houses", strange bars, and weirder art galleries as well as all the usual touristy stuff.

I'm handy with computers and I'm an English teacher. Plus I don't let life bother me that much.

Countries I’ve Visited

China, South Korea

Countries I’ve Lived In
