One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

In April 2011 I spent two weeks in a small city in the south west of Turkey called Mardin, a far cry from the usual sights of the stunning western coastlines and the busy and culturally packed ambiance of the capital, Istanbul. Mardin is a rural city located near the Syrian and Iraq boarders of Turkey, an area rife with separalist conflicts. However seated across the side of a series of mountains, the sprawling city overlooks the plains of Mesopotamia and transports you to another space/time dimension. A truly awe inspiring and breath taken sight, a fertile, a rich landscape blending vibrant greens of the cultivated croops and grasses with the azure and topaz blues of the sky, embracing the earth in a hazy glow.

I found myself immersed in a landscape where you could feel history oozing out of its contours, the atmosphere and humidity in the air simultaneously carried a sense of knowing and anticipation, understanding what had happened in the its past and biding its time to see what its future would bring.
