About Me

*** PLEASE, IF YOU ARE REQUESTING TO SURF WITH ME I NEED AT LEAST 3 DAYS NOTICE*** I get too many requests with less than 24 hour notice! I need more time to get back to you and to plan accordingly. If you give me short notice, I'll need a very good reason why.***

CURRENT MISSION

Make new friends, explore the world, contribute to the CS community

ABOUT ME

Kristen and I were married in December,2011 and we are living and loving in Eugene, OR. We love to be in the woods with each other and friends, at music festivals or parties around campfires.

We look forward to meeting surfers and hosts. We are very clean, respectful of people's property, time and boundaries. We can go to bed early or stay up late depending on the circumstances. We love to cook and enjoy fine foods & drink. I would love to cook up a meal for us all to enjoy if we can round up some good ingredients. I love to meet other musicians and play together if you are open to that sort of thing.

PHILOSOPHY

I think it is a good idea to think about one's personal philosophy throughout life and revise as experience teaches new lessons. Perhaps the most important thing for me is to have a rich experience of being alive. We are only awake so many hours over 60-90+ years if we are lucky and there is a lot of life to experience. Most of my life, I have not been present in the moment, but I am striving to pay attention and be awake at all times.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We have surfed a few times and looking forward to hosting in the near future.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

We have been hosts for friends and strangers in need in the past, but have not hosted through this website yet. Our trip to Seattle and Vancouver was our first experience surfing and it was the greatest time. We really enjoyed meeting our hosts! Europe has expanded our appreciation of couchsurfing further, and we are now feeling extremely grateful to this website for allowing us to meet such wonderful new friends.

Music, Movies, and Books

Mostly non-fiction about scientific subjects and songwriting books.

Music is so vast but I'll try a few:

Blues: John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Albert King, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Koko Taylor

Funk & Soul: James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cook, Lee Dorsey, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Lauren Hill/Fugees, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Betty Davis!, D'Angelo

Modern electronic/hard to classify: The Books, Amon Tobin, Critters Buggin', Joan Armatrading, Fiona Apple

Rock: Hendrix, Wilco, Radiohead, Black Keys, Beatles, Pixies, Elvis Costello, Velvet Underground, Flaming Lips, Chuck Berry, Polvo, Rapeman, The Jesus Lizard, The Clash, Frank Black, Guided by Voices, White Stripes, Clutch, older Tool, I like a lot of classic rock nostalgically. My wife would add the Dead and Phish to this list, though she is not a 'head'

Jazz: John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Dina Washington!, Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Lambert Hendricks & Ross

World: Too many, so I'll mention styles/countries: Mali, Senegal, South Africa, India, Latin America, Flamenco, Reggae, Hawaiian. Special shouts to Malathini and Etoile de Dakar

Hip Hop: Blackalicious, De la Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Beasties, The Pharcyde, Common Sense, Lil Wayne, older Beck

FOLK: Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Niel Young, Leadbelly, Nanci Griffith, Joni Mitchell, John Hartford, Ani Difranco

Classical: Great piano is a favorite. I mostly listen to Horowitz, the Goldberg Variations, Beethoven, Ravel, Rachmaninov.

Country: John Prine!!, George Jones, Johnny Cash,

I don't really keep track of my favorite movies. They seem to slip by and out of memory.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Stood on top of Half Dome in Yosemite
Seen phosphorescent plankton in Costa Rica
Played guitar on a camel riding through the Sahara

Teach, Learn, Share

I'd be glad to teach some beginner/intermediate guitar and I'd be glad to learn some too. I'm an advanced intermediate I guess. Music is a never-ending learning experience and you never play the same thing twice.

I'm good with computers, so I can help a bit, though usually when I travel I like to escape them :)

What I Can Share with Hosts

Conversation, friendship, food, music, and whatever else we happen to have with us

Countries I’ve Visited

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Cambodia, Canada, Costa Rica, Fiji, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Monaco, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States
