About Me

ABOUT ME

I'm a 25-year old from NYC, attending law school this fall in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and am planning to spend several weeks traveling to Russia, the Baltics and more before I start school. This February my girlfriend and I also plan on travelling to Colombia (Medellin and Cartagena!) I love hiking (I will be backpacking the Appalachian Trail for two months starting this March) as well as reading and playing guitar (check out my band! www.sputzringley.bandcamp.com).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm excited to meet new people during my travels and learn about other places and cultures in a way that only Couchsurfing can offer. I think Couchsurfing is the only way to properly experience a new place - rather than participate in the conspicuous consumption of the tourism economy, I think spending time and sharing a space with someone who inhabits that place, whether they're a local or an expat of sorts, can offer a unique perspective that conventional tourism cannot offer.

I'm hoping to stay with some friendly and outgoing people during my upcoming trips. It would be great to be able to see the cities through the eyes of someone who lives there rather than fumble around on my own as a tourist. Would love to exchange stories and talk about all sorts of things!
While hostels are always fun, there's nothing like the unique experience of briefly sharing a space and entering the world of someone from a new city.

Interests

I'm an avid reader and hiker (I try to take backpacking trips as frequent as possible, and I plan to start the Appalachian Trail this Spring). I play guitar and If I'm not playing music with my friends, I like to see live music of all types, such as (punk) rock, jazz, and literally anything else. Otherwise I enjoy vegan cuisine and healthy cooking, as well as watching movies, bike riding, and going out for drinks with friends!

Music, Movies, and Books

Some of my favorite writers include: Knausgaard, Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Twain, Barthes, Borges, Fanon, Proust, Murakami, David Foster Wallace, Percival Everett, Saidiya Hartman, Fred Moten, Andrea Long Chu, Maggie Nelson, Rachel Cusk, Sam Lypsite, Mark Greif, Keith Gessen, and so on...

Some movies: Battle of Algiers, Friends of Eddie Coyle, Seven Samurai, Wild Strawberries, Alien, Thin Red Line, Burn After Reading, Force Majeur, The Square, The Florida Project, Good Time...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I had to scare off a black bear during a hiking trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Tennessee.

In Fes, Morocco, I went to a Hammam (bathhouse) and received what I can only describe as a two-person tandem acrobatic massage and stretching routine, which felt like being tumbled through a laundry machine, all from an incredibly strong and talented Moroccan guy. I didn't know what I was getting into - at one point he was throwing huge buckets of steaming water at me - but afterwards I felt reborn!

Hopefully this Spring I will be able to add here that I've hiked some hundreds of miles on the Appalachian Trail. It's something I've always wanted to do!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I don't consider myself particularly knowledgeable about anything, but I can at least offer the perspective of a left-wing student from New York! I love literature, philosophy, history, as well as talking politics, and would love to engage people I meet to learn about their values and interests in life.

I'm also going to law school this fall, and I also have ambitions to write fiction, so I can share experiences in this arena as well!
