One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Siena, Italy-The Palio: In 2010, I was studying abroad in Italy taking a Wine Appreciation class and during the last week of class our teacher took us on a wonderful field-trip to a Montepulciano vineyard and winery. After having such an amazing day at this winery, my Thai friend and I decided to go on a spur of the moment trip to Siena to watch the Palio. I knew that it would be an experience, but I would have never guessed that it would be as amazing as it was. Once we arrived at the coliseum, we worked our way down to the middle of the arena and enjoyed the excitement and flag showcasing, prior to the race. Soon the race began, and there we were surrounded by jubilant people jumping and cheering as the ten bareback riders (each representing their district within Siena) raced their powerful horses around the thousands of people standing in the middle of the arena. The energy was so high and so powerful that my entire body was tingling with excitement, to fully experience the intense desire and passion that the people of Siena exert during the Palio was unreal. It was amazing, even after the race had ended I could still feel the energy surging through my body from all the excitement and emotion displayed by the Italian people. It was a wonderful end to my already fantastic day. I left Siena, that day, feeling so alive.
