About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to ice skate everywhere.

ABOUT ME

I am a junior at St. Mary's College of Maryland, studying Education for Social Justice and Environmental Studies. After I graduate, I hope to teach abroad in developing countries. Until then, I really want to travel as much as I can, master various languages, experience different cultures, and meet new people along the way.

PHILOSOPHY

I'm a big believer in volunteerism, whether it's service for people or the environment. I feel that it is my personal obligation to help others in any way I can. If I lived in Haiti purifying water or teaching children in schools for the rest of my life, I'd be perfectly happy.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

i am currently unable to host, as I live in a dorm at college, but I am do look into surfing when I travel and am up for hanging out with anyone, whether I'm traveling somewhere or someone is around me!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have been hosted by a couchsurfer, Salim, in Monterrey, Mexico for a week. I've also gone on a weekend roadtrip with a couchsurfer from France, Antione, in the Dominican Republic! I can't wait to have make more friends in this adventurous community!

Interests

I really value education, in all forms. Trying to figure out new, different, and fun ways to teach makes me very excited and enthusiastic. I want, more than anything, to encourage students to value education so that they may use what they learn to their own advantage. I want to make the education system fair, with good teachers who care about their students. When I'm not working or doing homework, I spend my time volunteering at an after-school program, cooking or playing games with friends, swimming/kayaking/sailing (our school is next to a river), gardening, dancing, and ice skating.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I have just arrived in a village called Luben, in a very poor and rural area of Haiti known as fifth section. I am introduced to the villagers by Pastor Bo, although I do not speak Creole and they do not speak English. I was told before I arrived that I would be responsible for taking a 7 year old girl, Sandra, to the doctor in the city, since Tamy was unable to make it. I do not yet know Sandra, or of her condition, but am utterly willing to take my duty seriously. Finally, Pastor Bo takes me inside a small hut, where I am introduced to Sandra and her parents. Sandra is small and shy, but she giggles at my attempt to say 'nice to meet you' in Creole. Pastor Bo translates for me, as her parents explain her condition to me. Sandra was born with a condition in which a segment of her large intestine protrudes from her abdomin. They remove her shirt and unravel the bandage to show me. I cannot believe my eyes, yet I struggle to compose my expression. That was truly an awe striking experience for me. I am happy to say now, that Sandra's operation went smoothly and she is now completely healed.
