About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'm lucky enough (I worked hard to make it happen) to be able to travel the world and work at the same time. I perform stand-up comedy and storytelling shows, sometimes in non-English speaking countries and try to find an audience! But mostly I find clubs, festivals or create my own tours. I get to see places and cover costs. It's not a glamorous life but it's never dull.

ABOUT ME

Hi my name is Marcus. I am from Australia. I sometimes have a beard and look homeless but I promise you I do shower! jaja

I grew up in a small country town by the coast in Australia, farming and beach area, but love cities also.
I'm totally addicted to travelling. Nothing better than landing in a new place and experiencing a new culture, meeting new people and exploring places I've not been before (or revisiting the ones I loved).

If I happen to be in your part of the world doing shows, come along and say g'day.
I'd be glad to have a beer or wine afterwards and often looking for interesting locals to show me around or hang with on my day(s) off.
This is how you can see what I'm doing work wise below.

Happy Travels

PHILOSOPHY

"something will happen"
I am sometimes anxious and stressed about my life and work, but try to remember that I'm usually pretty fortunate to be wherever I am, and perhaps morbidly think "well we're all gonna die sometime, so I might as well have some fun along the way, so I like to live by the motto that "something will happen".

If it makes you happy and it doesn't hurt anyone, do it and don't worry what people think of you. You will be a step closer to happiness.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'd surfed couches of friends and friends of friends for many years before Couchsurfing website existed, so when this came along I decided to join to expand the network. I lived in Scotland and hosted then, but now I work on the road a lot and can't host so often, but when I do find a base I have been able to return the thanks by hosting when I can. And when I'm in Australia visiting my family I host there also.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I lost my couchsurfing virginity in style, picked up at the airport, yoga class and Mexican dinner then midnight swimming in a backyard pool followed by a great sleep in my own room with ensuite and a cooked breakfast!
The next night I shared the cushions of a couch with 3 others!
This sums up couchsurfing, always a unique experience. Embrace it.

Interests

Travelling. does that sound familiar anyone?
Learning new languages, meeting people from different parts of the world and sharing experiences.
Comedy, live music, the great outdoors, sunny days and a few beers or wine & BBQ's with new and old friends.

What I want to do more of:
Yoga, meditation, language, musical instruments, learning anything!

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: True crime documentaries, fantastic. Planet Earth, Blue Planet.
Music: anything live, festivals are amazing. I like to try all sorts of music, any style can be great at the right time.
Books: Maps (love picturing where I'm going next!) Bill Bryson, he's great.
Biographies and real stories, I also like to write a lot myself.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Seriously, just one?

The most amazing thing I've done is have the courage to venture into the world alone. Stepping out of my comfort zone and allowing the travel bug to take a big bite! Travelling with friends can be fun but I feel I get to know locals and open myself up to whatever comes my way better on my own. I've met some of the most amazing people this way. No, I won't hashtag journey, but I do appreciate the ride!
I like to think there are so many more great things to do and see that the best hasn't happened yet.

Teach, Learn, Share

Be kind. I try share my English in exchange for Spanish (or any other language) if we can help and any other language for that matter. I love to learn about different cultures and when in my hometown show people the places most tourists don't go. So I like it when people take me places locals do also.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share some funny stories of my travels, give me enough wine and maybe I'll tell you some even funnier stories! If I'm performing when in your town I can take you to a show. Otherwise, I like to (try to) cook and share a laugh and learn. If you need help with English I am fluent too. Oh and I have some Vegemite, like any good Australian does. I will probably make you try it!
