About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to fill the time between my seasons working in Antarctica

ABOUT ME

I obtained my passport a few years ago in order to work in Antarctica, and having it has inspired me to extend my traveling experience. The more stamps I get the more I want more. I'm not being a "stamp snob"- I use those stamps as inspiration for more travel. I guess any hosts should also know I am straight edge, so they needn't worry about inappropriate behavior on my part. I am up for many activities, just not anything that might alter my behavior in a way I wouldn't normally act.

PHILOSOPHY

I can say I am very open minded and try to focus on really hearing people when they speak, not just waiting for my turn to talk (Yep, I kind of lifted that from Fight Club...but it's true).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

So far I have only been able to surf, as half my year is spent in Antarctica and the other half is spent traveling. I hope I have been a considerate surfer who has been able to satisfy some of the curiousities about the Ice and what kind of person would go down there.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I really can't say enough about my enthusiasm for this project. I have had nothing but great experiences, as people have constantly made time to show me around or give great tips on what else I might do around their areas (locals night in Hawea, Museums in Minneapolis, bush walks behind the house, etc).

Interests

right now I'm really into the following: soccer(Euro 2008 was amazing), road cycling (although I still won't watch the Tour), women's flat track roller derby (incredibly athletic and friendly women), and reading (Antarctic books topping the list).

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm currently working my way through any Antarctic books I can find, a huge Irish Lit book, and several goofy, fun, humorous books. I just finished a book on The Simpsons, and began a Ghengis Khan biography.
Musically, I'm going through a revitalization- I attended last years Coachella music festival in California in April. Besides being floored by headliners Prince, Portishead, and the Raconteurs I was introduced to all sorts of indie rock, techno, and electronica music. I also saw Dwight Yokum perform there.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One? It's a hard choice between completing Ultra Mountain bike races (100 miles), the LOTOJA road bike race (206 miles), working in Antarctica, or finally making it to New Zealand (Wanaka is now one of my favorite places in the world).

Teach, Learn, Share

I may not be a scholar in Antarctic history, but those guys can't tell you what it's like eating chicken and raspberries in the Galley for three straight meals.

Countries I’ve Visited

Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, United States
