About Me

I'm a married 20-something living with my husband in Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. We have an awesome little terrier mutt named Leo. I found him wandering outside my apartment when I was teaching English in Beijing in 2013, and brought him back to the states with me later that year. We both grew up in Maryland and are glad to be back in the area, but still have an itch to travel.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We hosted twice when we were living in an apartment in Palo Alto, CA. It was a great experience both times (thanks Max and Tom, and Luke!) and we look forward to hosting again in the future when our lives are a little more settled.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Crashing with friends is a great way to travel on a budget. We haven't stayed with someone through couchsurfing yet, but often crash at friends' places when we're traveling for the holidays/weddings, etc.

Interests

Music, Movies, and Books

Oh too many movies to list, but anyone who knows me will at some point be forced to watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, To Catch A Thief, The Philadelphia Story, and Meet Joe Black. Dan likes a lot of old war movies, especially Patton.

We both love a lot of 60s and 70s music (classic rock), but I like a lot of older stuff too and some classical.

We're both voracious readers as well.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Helen: grew up traveling a lot with family and camping in New Hampshire and Maine. Highlights include hiking Mt. Katahdin, skiing at Whistler in Canada, and taking a "tiger cruise" on a U.S. naval destroyer between Saipan and Japan, seeing boiling mud pots in Yellowstone, watching the sun rise atop Masada in Israel, and hiking the Great Wall of China.

Dan has done field work in the High Canadian Arctic (Axel Heiberg and Ellesmere Islands), South Africa and Lesotho, and Hawaii. He's also traveled across the USA (east to west) 3 times, camping along the way, and now we've driven together west to east for our move back to Maryland in September 2011.

Teach, Learn, Share

Helen: I love photography, can sing, and have a lot of experience working as a writer/editor.

Dan knows a lot about geology and science in general. He loves to cook and enjoys trying new recipes.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Our schedules are generally too unpredictable to host these days, but if you're passing through on a weekend and can give us a few weeks' notice, we might love to have you stay on our couch. At minimum, we can give you some sightseeing recommendations.
