ABOUT ME

I have been working as a writer, translator, photographer and magazine editor since 1999. Some of my clients are Flying Dutchman magazine, KLM Agent, Revu, Portfolio, Mercedes magazine, Winq, Villa d'Arte and Hilton hotels. My stories and photographs have appeared in magazines worldwide, including The Out Traveller (USA), The Adelaide Advertiser (Australia), Longevity Magazine (South Africa), The Peak (Asia), and the South China Morning Post (China). As the deputy editor-in-chief of Winq International, I set up a high end men's lifestyle magazine, now distributed in over 50 countries worldwide.

I specialised in copyright and media law at the University of Amsterdam, and took up journalism soon after finishing my degree. Since then, I have written on a wide range of subjects, including film, technology, pop culture, health and internet. Most extensively, though, I have written on travel. I have visited over sixty countries, sometimes travelling on a shoestring, sometimes jetting in unadulterated, first class luxury. I'm is as comfortable on a bus with more poultry than passengers, as I am sipping Dom Pérignon on a private jet. (Well, almost.)

On assignment, I have shimmied with Moscovite billionaires, palled around with Sarah Palin’s imaginary gay friends, chummed up with Indian royalty. I have been saved from a trip to a Mexican prison cell by a superhero in pink tights and proudly shared a Sydney hotel bed with Kylie Minogue – though admittedly, she left the suite just before I arrived.

Recently, I misguidedly invited myself to an unpleasant but insightful interrogation by Hezbollah, worked on a story on tiger poaching in the last refuges of Rudyard Kipling's romantic wilderness, and visited the opulent royal palaces of Rajasthan's maharajas. On the way, I shared a pool with Israeli arms dealers, slurped opium from the hand of an elderly vegetarian, and enjoyed a few too many gin & tonics with a trigger-happy prince.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

After meeting some couchsurfers in Latin America and Greece, I finally decided to give it couchsurfing a try on an overland trip across Russia. And I've been raving about it ever since :)
