One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A story from home: A long hike became a long night of headlamps and hands-and-knees scrambling up a rocky portion of a gusty mountain. The winds whipping across the bald-faced false summit of the mountain would blow over our tent, so we had to find large rocks to hold it down against the wind. I stayed awake all night listening to the sound of my little brother's teeth chatter from the cold even after I had already given him all of my clothes to wear. After all this, in the morning, I exited our tent at 3,500 feet above the trail head, and picked blueberries for breakfast while I watched the sun rise over the lakes and mountains (and off a bit further in the distance, the coast) of lovely Maine.

But what really made the trip was building a cairn at the top with my brothers and sharing candy bars that I had secretly packed for us as a treat at the summit, and sharing a beer that my brother had secretly packed for us as a treat at the summit.

Teach, Learn, Share

Read and reread the instructions on a box of matches, they tend to fool you at the worst time. Also, when deciding to pack more water or more beer, pack more beer. It keeps you warm when you run out of matches!
