About Me

My name is Kem.

I find the task of describing oneself quite a confusing affair. But for the sake of creating a functional profile, it must be done.

I find the most worthwhile challenge in life is to live it. To be as present as one can be in each moment. That's as simple as I can put it.

I was born in New Zealand and that is where I currently reside. Since 2012 I have been moving around the country, choosing different spots to build a life, only to once again deconstruct it, move on then start the process again. I am quite fond of this place and enjoy discovering the different microclimates spread out across the country.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I use Couchsurfing as a means to connect with other travellers. This is usually for the purpose of finding a couch to stay on or to find travel companions. At this stage of my life I don't have a place where I can host people. This is definitely something I would like to do in future.

Interests

As I move through life (or as life moves through me) I find my interests change and flow accordingly. The best I can do is list a few things that I am currently interested in and have been interested in..

Martial arts. I have explored martial arts since I was 17 years old. I have practised Muay Thai, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, mma, wrestling, and nunchuku training. My training has slowed down lately, and I mainly focus on movement and mobility.

Music. I have played the guitar since I was 12 years old. I also play the piano and ukulele. I have explored a little bit of the harmonica as well.

I am into language learning. The languages I focus on are Spanish, German and Khmer (my parents are from Cambodia).

Self sufficiency. Over the last few years I have become more and more interested in simple living. The area of self sufficiency compliments this well. I am currently living in a small shack on a property in The Coromandel in New Zealand. There is no electricity or running water. I do most of my cooking with the wood burner and at night I am operating by candle light. It is quite a nice way to be.
I have also been looking into Cob House construction. I have done a little bit of this and would like to build my own one day.
