About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Reestablishing balance.

ABOUT ME

I was a navy officer for 8 years (military), and then I became a merchant marine officer (as civilian as Ismael from Moby Dick, Captain Phillips or Joseph Conrad). So if you have a thing with the military: give me a break and an opportunity, I´m a little fed up with prejudices.

I am an atheist (convinced and coherent) and a socialist (though not fully participating).

But what about passion, why do we always define our selves for our jobs?? I love travelling on the first place, and then most sports (doing, not only watching), mostly related to water (waterpolo, swimming, sailing, triatlon).

And luckily, I love my job.

PHILOSOPHY

Wow, what a question!

I believe in certain sayings that can resume my philosophy:

The price of freedom is loneliness.

You have to work for a living and not live to work.

Do not do to others what you would not like to be done to you.

"Low consumism is freedom" (that´s from my own!).

"He who doesn´t travel does not know the value of man" (arabic proverb).

"Fascism is cured by reading, and racism is cured by traveling." (Miguel de Unamuno)

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one´s lifetime." (Mark Twain) This is my favourite...

And Mark Twain surprised me again on another CS profile: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." (Mark Twain... turned out doubtful looks like someone made it up, but wooow it's so nice!)

In full moon nights I fancy to eat human flesh, so better try other dates.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I´ve hosted people a few times already, and, togheher with my ex-wife, have used other people´s couches several times.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Though I registered my profile in 2011, I´ve been in HC since 2007, at least. And I had a shared profile with my ex wife in CS since 2010. These gave me many exeriences. I'd say that on the past ten years, I have used CS in almost all my long journeys. If a statistic was requested, I'd say that one out of every three nigths of my longer journeys have been spent on Couchs. Though it is not so simple to find a good couch to meet or be hosted, it is always worth the effort. You will never get to really know a a place, his people and his culture if you go only to a hotel, hostel or camping. Only CS and HC give you a real insight of the places you travel through.

Interests

But I would say that the two things that I am most interested in finding out when i get to somwhere is how people live. How they got to where they are and how they are (history) and what is their political present (it tells you a lot of how people act and live collectively).
Also I love to know about languages and how they influence the way people live and communicate.
For this, one needs definitevly to do CS in one way or the other.
I love to eat human flesh on full moon nights, so you might want to try other dates.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Trekking and diving in the Amazon River (well, it was the Tapajós really, but very very close to the Amazon, is equally valid).
I did two antarctic campaigns with an icebreaker.
I went down under in a submarine and flew in helicopter several times. I jumped from a helicopter into the water!
Any day I can see the stars in a camp fire in the middle of nowhere is an amazing thing I do.
Arriving to Ushuaia from the north in a sailing boat.
I had a sailboat for six years... and I doubt I will repeat that.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach some spanish, I enjoy most that revolves around languages. I can teach a lot about argentine history and politics if you are interested.
Again I am looking to learn tango again, so I can take you to classes or to see a milonga (a tango ball).
I love learning all of the above as well, from anybody passionate enough as to be willing to teach that.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Much about the same as said above.

If you plan to use CS, do it for a great travelling experience. "I wanna save money" requests go straight to the trash bin. If you want me to host you, there is something specific on my profile that must have called your attention. Mention it and you´ll get extra attention!!
