About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Visiting Switzerland and editing the MS of an Indian sitar player who lives in Sursee.

ABOUT ME

Mature English guy, likes people until they give me a very good reason not to !
Slightly sporty (squash, tennis, swimming, walking - but not in the hills !).
Am inordinately proud of my small-but-perfectly-formed library, with books on true crime (brit, north american, rest-of-world), Egyptology, the dead sea scrolls, parapsychology, science, chess, Kennedyana, psychology, religion, crime fiction. My particular interests are fraud in science, and miscarriages of justice. Plus
Personalitywise I'm outgoing, friendly, and people tell me I have interesting conversation, which is nice, although I hope I balance it out by listening as well. - that's for you to judge.

PHILOSOPHY

Live and let live. I am moderately outgoing, friendly, pleasant, and hopefully good company. It will be interesting to see a little of the life you live, what you do, where you shop, what your neighborhood is like, where you go for culture or amusement.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am able to host as I live alone in a house.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I was in Switzerland for several years and welcomed anyone who needed a couch. Once a colleague from work unexpectedly rang my doorbell at midnight - he's come back from the UK and had forgotten his key ! No big deal.

Interests

When younger I did quite a bit of couch surfing, but I haven't really needed to do it until recently, when c.s. seems like a good idea as I'll be in Switzerland for the second half of Marc h 2019.

Music, Movies, and Books

Interested in US films noir of the 40s and 50s (e.g. Double Indemnity), and Hitchcock movies.
Most Canadian films (whatever "canadian" means).
Brit movies of the noir era.
Some French directors are to my taste, such as Eric Rohmer and Claude Chabrol, and plus oriental ones like Satyajit Ray. But credit where credit's due - the recent Michael Douglas remake of Chabrol's La femme infidele was almost as good as the original ..
Books - true crime and crime fiction, and books about science, especially fraud therein.
Music - melodic rock-folk from the 60s onward - Al Stewart, Leonard Cohen, Dylan, Neil Young, Crosby Stills and Nash, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Rolling stones (early), The Strawbs (religious folk-rock), Enigma (rock + Gregorian Chant), Fleetwood Mac (both their incarnations as blues and soft rock artistes). Lindisfarne.
I also sometimes like classical music - our Church folk group did Pachelbel's Canon for a wedding recently, and very pleasant it was too, sort of minuet-ish. And who couldn't love Bach's Jesu Joy of man desiring or even Beethoven's simple but charming Fuer Elise ?

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Seeing the Taj Mahal was an experience. The craftmanship of the masons who worked on the project was incredible - it couldn't be done today.
Ive taken the Canadian train across Canada both from east (Toronto) to west (Vancouver) and also the reverse journey. An incredible experience !

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm not terribly practical but I can
- play the folk guitar
- give a head, back or foot massage
- converse intelligently on many topics
- cook an edible meal - it will probably include lamb !
- ask questions of you or your interests or neighbourhood
- give "life coach" type advice if requested
- speak German or French to a moderate standard. My Spanish needs a little work !
- play chess, squash or tennis
- write a computer program
- I'm an inveterate "bargain hunter" - we could explore what's to offer in your neck of the woods ?!

What I Can Share with Hosts

My interest in sport, love of cycling and swimming and playing chess. playing the guitar, good conversation, cooking a meal, listening to each other's likes and dislikes. Any query as regards the English language. My love of reading.
