About Me

Hey, I’m Jay!

I was born and grew up in Singapore. I'm a student in college right now, with intentions to major in environmental studies. I'm a big fan of music, art, and food. Also very interested in activism relating to social and environmental justice. I enjoy engaging in conversations with individuals with different perspectives and backgrounds, and am continuously learning about how vast the world truly is.

I'm not hosting right now as I live in an inaccessible campus. But I promise you respect, courtesy and friendship as a guest in your home.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I enjoy learning about new spaces through stories.

I have the privilege of being in an incredibly diverse community at my college. We live together over the semester, but through winter and summer breaks I've been to my friends' homes continents away and these visits have fostered some of the most profound experiences and connections. I would like more glimpses into such experiences with people all around.

Music, Movies, and Books

Lots of music! Of all genres, though rock is the genre I always go back to. Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Strokes, The Smiths, Bon Iver, Arctic Monkeys, Tame Impala and Frank Ocean are my favourites.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I completed a ten-day silent Vipassana meditation course in Nepal. It was intense, to say the least - I hesitate to label this as "amazing" because it really wasn't about being a good experience as much as being an experience in itself, but it was certainly one of the most profound and challenging experiences I've had.

Teach, Learn, Share

I thoroughly appreciate thinking through ideas - there's nothing like a good conversation. It could be about literally anything - I'm always happy to seriously contemplating all ideas and share my views and perspectives.

More concretely, though, I’ve grown up in Singapore - a tiny country that is an interesting and sometimes contradictory mix of western (mostly American and British) influences with Asian (mostly Chinese, Indian and Malay). I will be happy to share about my experiences here.

I'm currently learning American Sign Language as well. I grew up learning Chinese (Mandarin), so if languages are of interest to you, I do have background in three very distinct languages that I will be happy to share.

I play the guitar and bass and would love to jam!
