About Me

I've been dreaming of riding my bike across the United States for decades. My wife and I were going to quit our jobs and ride a tandem across the U.S. when we were first married, but our son came along - so we postponed that dream. I've been working in high stress IT jobs ever since graduating from college, and raising a family and making a living has put a kink in my plans. My father passed away about a year and a half ago. My mom had the same dream when she was in Nursing school in the late 1950's. She ended up saving money for a year after graduation and riding a 3-speed Raleigh bike around Europe for three months. She kept encouraging me to ride on midwest tours, and to find a way to take time off of work to ride my dream ride. She passed away in January 2019. Our son is out of college and living on his own, and I am sad that I never got to do the ride and have my mom follow my trip. I've decided to quit my job and ride the Southern Tier route across America. I'm doing this for my mom and for myself. I'll figure out how to get back to work after I complete this journey. Life is so very short. I should have done this years ago. I'm looking forward to the adventure, but I'm a little scared of cold weather. I hope it warms up as I cross the U.S. I hope to be stronger, both mentally and physically when I finish, and have a fresh start in life again. Bike touring when I was younger gave me such joy and elation. I'm hoping to regain those same feelings again, and think about my life and the world on my trip. Also, I will be searching for good Mexican food and tasty beer!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I am on a fully self supported trip across the Southern portion of the USA on bicycling. I'm looking for ways to save money and meet people. I started my journey in St. Augustine, FL on March 11, 2019. I hope to arrive in San Diego in 2 to 3 months.
