About Me

Community is the oil which lubricates the engine of my life- I am drawn to alternative ways of living under systems of violence, and am dedicated to dismantling the capitalist, colonial world order, or what Aileen Moreton-Robinson calls the "possessive logics of patriarchal white sovereignty".

Currently studying a Bachelor of Arts, but really I am studying anything I find interesting in my spare time, the degree just gives me some structure and routine to life. If you read my profile and are okay with the unfortunate limitations, I am happy to open my home and my heart to a fellow human.

Fundamentally, I use couchsurfing as a means to open my way of life to other people. As a household, as a community of people who love to share, we are always open to those who have struggled, who find life sometimes unliveable, and who are travelling on their own journey of life.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The usual clichés, but most importantly just meeting new people, many of whom have turned into lifelong friends. Seeking like minded people who appreciate the world and all its beauty, whilst also aiming to live a laidback travel lifestyle. I have had such pleasant and life affirming times on here before that it is only natural I return to it.

Interests

I'm interested in anything and everything. If you show me, I will listen.

Music, Movies, and Books

Oh my, where to start!

Music- in my ambient stage at this time, so artists like Burial or HOME are the go to, but also enjoy 90's rap, classical, synthwave and more. Recommend me something!

Movies- as an avid cinephile I could spend years composing my list, but I saw some 200+ films in the year 2017 alone. Some highlights include Moonrise Kingdom, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Cell 211, Swiss Army Man, Moonlight, Raw, The Seventh Seal and more! If you're interested in film, I am interested in you! Update- worked at a London cinema for half a year, good times. Update 2.0- I am very much not in my film watching phase, moreso documentaries. Of note, especially for the so called australian context, are 'After the apology', 'exterminate all the brutes', 'Utopia' by John Pilger, and a general one- 'Night and Fog' by Alain Resnais

Books- can appreciate most novels, but am particularly fond of non-fiction, with philosophical or historical implications. Also, can never say no to a politically charged text, irrespective of the authors leanings. Basically I'll read anything you put in front of me. Melbourne Update- mostly reading critical theory these days because of my degree.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Directed, wrote, produced, edited and starred in a short film screened at a local festival! Yes, it is miserably amateurish and horribly shot, but it is a start. If I get to know you well enough you might get to see it.

Spent 5 months mostly couchsurfing Europe, with many memories made after moving to London as an 18 year old.

I also was a tour guide at an underground cave system in NSW, but unfortunately never hosted anyone there as its rarely visited by international backpackers.

Update- I have finally got something out to the world in the form of writing! It's only a student newspaper, but it's a start. If you are writerly, we will get along, and I love writing collectively

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you to play some of my favourite board games, improve your English, the basics of ping pong or even how to cook some of my favourite meals.

Id love to learn anything new from language to history to food. I want to never stop learning.

I can share whatever I have to offer, introduce you to some friends while here and give you the life of a twenty something university student in this city. I do a bit of writing here and there, but above all am a professional idiot who doesn't take life too seriously when not required.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Company, a helping hand, household chores, a meal or even a person to do the groceries with! I'd love to teach someone to play chess, or talk about history, the material conditions of our lives, and everything in between. If I also have souvenirs from my home, I can bring them with me to leave a little piece of John with you :) Even just sharing a meal and a drink is the most basic form of hospitality I'd like to share
