About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Learning every day

ABOUT ME

I was born in a vast desert country on the south-west tip of Africa - Namibia. Which means I can't ever get enough of rain, even if it lasts for weeks... Nowadays I am very fortunate to live at the foot of Table Mountain in one of the most beautiful cities in the world - Cape Town.

My journey has taken me from the tip of Africa to the UK for a number of years, and back again. I have found travelling to be the most thrilling and invigorating thing under the sun - if only it was possible to do it all the time :) I enjoy hosting visitors to lovely Cape Town, and that is why I love the couchsurfing concept. It is an excellent way of promoting better understanding among people from all corners of the world, something we need so desperately in today's world.

PHILOSOPHY

Always try to see the bigger picture. (If you can't, watch the space walk in Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey'.) And - treat everyone you meet with love and compassion - we are all One.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am open to host a surfer from time to time, or to just meet up for drinks, hikes, sightseeing or a bit of dancing, playing pool or listen to local music ... At the moment, I am studying alongside my full-time job, so hosting is a bit challenging, but I gladly make time for a get-together over a meal, a hike, a music venue.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've hosted probably 10 - 15 surfers since I signed on, and I have a great time, every time. I love meeting people from all corners of the world, and showing off my home town to them.

Interests

I am a journalist by trade. I love politics and current affairs. I have left the newsroom behind some years ago and work as a communication manager for a children's rights research institute at one of our universities. I am enjoy great movies, particularly from outside Hollywood, and from different countries and cultures.

I think British humour rules :)

I love rock music - it physically recharges me with energy and zest for life. So I try to get to good, live rock/blues shows when they are around, and ever so often go let my hair loose at Cape Town's only 'retro club'. The vibes in our local jazz bar a few blocks from my home have slowly grown on me, especially the awesome talent that we have here.
I have discovered a fierce competitor in myself since I learned to play pool in my early thirties, and enjoy a night of shooting balls at the local (and very rocking) pool hall.
The best things I ever did for myself was to quit smoking, taking up yoga and meditation, and having my eyes lasered so that I don't need to wear glasses anymore.
I find the world a fascinating place, and (like so many millions of others I guess) would just travel all my life if I had the means.

Music, Movies, and Books

Olivier Stone, Stanley Kubrick, the Cohen Bros, David Kronenberg, anything British.
All things rock, with its brother the blues and its sister, soul. On the other side of the specturm: Mozart. World music, especially music of spiritual nature.
I dont get much time to read books (or rather, I dont make much time). On my bookshelves are Terry Pratchett, Margaret Atwood, Anne Rice, Tom Wolfe, Tom Robbins, Aldus Huxley.
Photography - a joy when you live in such a pretty city, and country.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Too many to list... but seeing Bob Dylan perform live three times does come up... And a trip to New York to see AC/DC in concert.

Teach, Learn, Share

When visiting South Africa, do understand that everyone in the country has been scorched by apartheid, not just those discriminated against. We need to remember that when we fight a 'war' against any group, we are also injuring ourselves.

Countries I’ve Visited

Egypt, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Tanzania, United States

Countries I’ve Lived In

Namibia, South Africa, United Kingdom
