About Me

I've travelled a lot, living and working abroad, on four continents, and even after moving back to Sweden, some years I've spent more on the road than at home, mostly for work. In that context I've always tried to do something to experience the places I've visited beyond "just" working. That said, living and working abroad for many years, learning language, and being immersed in the culture is a fantastic experience. With any travel I enjoy local food, which is an important part, the history, and above all the people and friends I make. I travel far less these days, am a parent to a teenager, have 1 1/2 cats, enjoy working out, cooking, nature. I've never been to Asia, and would like to go to Vietnam, Japan, but also a place like Galapagos would be fantastic to experience.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The most rewarding experiences have been meeting people locally, connecting, making friends, and maintaining contact even decades afterwards. The last time I couchsurfed was probably back in 1988 or so. It wasn't organized, there wasn't any internet. It was mostly in student dorms, or just meeting people on the beach, and so on, who offered a place to stay. I want more of that in my life.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: anything with congas, great female voices, great lyrics, and also appreciating classical music more lately.

Movies: Groundhog Day, Tampopo, North by Northwest, City of God, Let the Right One In

Books: Mostly academic, but really anything that have given me new perspectives; also biographies; as for for novels, for example, The Attempt by John Hopkins - a travel novel, or writings by Lars Gustafsson.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sleeping at night in the sand at Ipanema Beach without getting into trouble.

Becoming a father.

Swimming a couple of hundred meters from the beach with my, then six year old, daughter, a great swimmer, and this diver appeared out of the water in front of us, a few meters away, and then sort of sunk back down into the water. Then popped up again, this time a little closer and waved. Then we saw it was a giant turtle.

Being contacted through Facebook by someone I'd met 20+ years at the beach, lost contact with and always wondered what they were doing, and what they were up to.

Learning to surf.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach would be presumptuous, more like sharing, learning.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Stories, experiences from many places, perhaps connections; cook and enjoy a meal together. I'm tidy, do my dishes, and clean up after myself.
