ABOUT ME

An optimistic cynic with lot a of opinions, I would give anything a try because life is all about new experiences and doing your best to help or at least not to hurt others.
Friends think of me as rather eccentric, so I guess I may come across as a tad odd to some people. I'd like to think that I'm a very kind person but do like my own space and respect others' privacy as well.
My previous incarnations included teaching English and attempting to follow the path of academia until I realised that Philosophy is no more than an amusing party game and it's time to make more money.
I work in the Arts and have been getting more and more involved in live music and event management.
Really dislike bad manners, freeloaders, indecision and inability/unwillingness to say what you mean. However, I'm not argumentative and would generally try to make everyone welcome.

PHILOSOPHY

Don't let the bastards get you down! My greatest discovery so far has been that life is much easier and more enjoyable if you stop caring what other people think, say or do.
Companionship is a 'nice to have' but not a necessity. Too many people drift into lukewarm relationships through fear and loneliness. If you can't stand your own company, you don't deserve other people's time and company.
Travelling doesn't necessarily broaden your mind but is bloody good fun and is definitely a lot of fun.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've been hosting in London for over 4 years and before was closely involved with the Leeds CS group. Despite an infuriatingly high number of generic spam requests from people with hardly any profile information, John and I have really enjoyed meeting people we've hosted so far.
I've lived all round the country and have good contacts in York, London, Oxford, Bristol, Leeds and many other places.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Met some great people in NYC and Lille. Met a lot of local Leeds CSers and have now hosted a number of people, both in Leeds and in London.
Been hosted in various places, incl. Canada, USA,Poland, Morocco, Hungary, Austria, Bulgaria, Israel and Leeds (UK).

Books - currently reading Do it for your mum and Kill your friends ( yes, it's all about music!)
Movies - Withnail and I, The Big Lebowski, Fight Club, Hallam Foe, True Romance, Amadeus... too many to mention. Music docs are a big favourite as well.
Music - Any genre but was brought up on pre-Britpop guitar music, so still have warm tender feelings towards bands like The Auteurs and Suede. Big fan of BBC 6 Music (a very middle class music station for/by peeps who know their pop culture/music)
More interested in merging music rather than endless cycles of reunions but not very keen on the current sparse electronic sound pierced through by 'atmospheric and poignant' female vocal. Hmmm...no. May not be fashionable but I still love guitars and do t have much love for electronica. I'm a huge fan of British Sea Power and can get rather tiresome talking about it.

I've supported myself since the age of 15, so the fact that I've got a good job and have been to uni is pretty amazing.
I've travelled around Europe. Lived in Russia and China. So far my favourite places in the world are Iceland,Hong Kong, New Orleans and San Francisco.
Just organised a big multi-venue music festival...nearly killed me but hey...amazing experience and zillions of contacts!

Hmmm... I can speak Russian but it's not smth that really appeals to me,so I tend to avoid any occasions that might necessitate such a thing.
I would love to learn more about blogging and social media as a fan/audience engagement tool.
