Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

The best couchsurfing experience I've had was in Barcelona, Spain; after getting robbed at knifepoint while looking for someplace to camp, I sent out a desperate message looking for a place to compose myself and regroup. Within just a few hours I had several offers, and ended up having a fantastic time in BCN. I ended up meeting a really fun group of guys who went out of their way to make me feel at home.

Couchsurfing has been an irreplaceable tool that allows people to share travel stories and experiences with others who are genuinely interested in helping fellow wanderers. I am inspired in humanity whenever a total stranger becomes a good friend.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

2014: Ashley and I were transferred to South Carolina, and we've bought a house!

2013: Ran my first marathon, not having trained and drinking my fiancee under the table the night before. Planning a wedding!

2012: A year of travel on the government's dime! 4 weeks in Guatemala and El Salvador, followed by 9 in Colombia. Lots of free US travel, too.

2011: Just getting started with the Coast Guard in Texas. Got the chance to visit my brother on a sweet surf trip to Fiji, followed by an "accidental" extended layover in Guam.

2010: I scored a sweet job with Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation as a kayak guide. As an added bonus, I got to feed and train the department's non-releasable wildlife, including a great horned owl, eastern screech owl, barred owl, red tailed hawk, six species of turtle, and three species of snake. I've since left that job to pursue a career with the US Coast Guard.

2009: I backpacked across Europe in a whirlwind six week trip, utilizing free lodging 36 of 42 nights (including 13 nights of couchsurfing with 6 hosts).

2008: I was given the opportunity to work with Under the Sleeping Buffalo, a not-for-profit organization based in Banff, Alberta, Canada as an intern with their resort environmental sustainability project.

2007: I began my love affair with Costa Rica. After spending two weeks in Nosara, I vowed to return. I've since been back several times to surf and enjoy the Pura Vida attitude.
